Best Graphic Design Software

Print marketers often ask “what is the best graphic design software on the market?”  The answer is not all that simple as there are so many programs to choose from today.  It also depends on what type of computer you use – Mac or PC, and what types of projects you typically manage.  Your skill level will also be a factor in choosing the best graphic design software as some programs are built for beginners and some more advanced programs will offer far more options for experienced graphic designers.graphic-design-software

Before you purchase any graphic design software, think about the type of graphic work that you have done in the past and what you expect to do in the future.  Is more of your work meant for print marketing?  Or do you do more on the web?  Or do you do a combination of both?  Some specific programs are better suited for particular tasks than others so you need to consider and prioritize your needs.

Top Graphic Design Software:

The main players in the graphic design field are Adobe, Corel, Quark, and Serif but there are many others available outside these players.  One way to determine the best for your need is to talk with your vendors and clients to see what they use.  It is far easier to share files and work together if all the vendors and clients are on the same platform.  This does not necessarily mean that you are working with the best graphic design software, but for the sake of convenience, the best does not always mean as much as the easiest.   According to Chris Lewis of Conquest Graphics, “we find that most of our clients and their design teams use Adobe for their design work.  While we can print from many different file formats, Adobe seems to be the most popular today.”

Is one Graphic Design Software Program enough?

When you talk with a professional graphic designer, you may find that they do not rely on just one software program to complete a job.  While a graphic artist may use one main program for the layout, they will often use different software for photo editing or for typesetting.  There are actually four different groups of software used in desktop publishing and there are additional add-ons and specialty software that is used to customize the design to fit the task.  When seeking the right software, start by looking the program that covers most of your requirements and you can supplement any weaknesses by adding a specific program down the road.  Your best bet is to talk to your in-house designer and your print vendor’s design team to get their preferences before making a purchase.

If you are new to graphic design, it may also make sense to outsource your design work rather than invest in the software at your company.  It may seems like this is a more expensive option but in many cases, outsourcing design work to a freelancer or to your printing company may actually be the least costly way to get the job done.  Freelancers often have invested in their own graphic design software so you do not have to pay for the equipment that they use, same with a printing company.  One benefit of using your print vendor is that often they do not mark up the cost of design work as much as an ad agency or freelancer because they make their profit on the printing rather than the design work.

In all cases, do your research and shop around for the best pricing.  There are many different opinions on this subject so it is hard to get a straight answer but if you make a list of your priorities, you will find it easier to shop for the solution.   When in doubt, go with the big name software as it has been proven to work well for a majority of designers.  With top-name brands, most of the bugs have been worked out and more people are familiar with the program so it makes printing and file sharing much easier.  If something does go wrong, the larger graphic design software companies have a larger customer support team to make it right for you.
